Group Dynamics in Psychiatric Settings

Goal: Group Dynamics constitute a fundamental element in psychiatric settings. Group psychotherapy, group staff meetings, the group “atmosphere” in clinics, the operation of a clinical frame within a wider institution are a few of the facets of psychiatric settings, where group processes are being developed on a day-to-day basis and group dynamics take place. People, who work in these settings, are at the same time affected and affect their expressions.

This one year Program of Clinical Training in Group Dynamics is organized for the sixth consecutive year. The first one, took place in the academic year 2013-2014. It combines theoretical education with experiential training and group supervision. Its aim is the acquisition of a basic Knowledge and skills on issues related to group dynamics and processes in general and, especially, when these phenomena take place and are experienced by subjects in the particular environment of psychiatric places.

This inter-departmental postgraduate program is built on the basis of international educational experiences and is addressed to psychiatrists (trained or trainees), to psychologists, as well as to social workers, nurses and occupational therapists who hold a university degree and work or have the intention to work in psychiatric settings.

At the completion of the program, trainees are required to submit a thesis and receive a Certificate of Clinical Postgraduate Training in Group Processes.

  • Psychiatric Settings: services and grouping, psychiatric healing, psychiatric reformation
  • Introduction to Psychoanalytic Group Psychotherapy
  • Transferential and Counter-transferential Phenomena in Groups 
  • The importance of the Group Setting and the issue of Enactment
  • Group Psychotherapy in Psychiatric Settings

Duration: 1 year (November 2018 – September 2019) :

-35 hours of theoretical training
-75 hours of participation in experiential groups
-10 hours of supervision
